Born in Sawston to James Gray and Sophia Elizabeth (Farrington), brother to Herbert Victor Gray. Left Sawston School in September 1907.

He was with the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment in an attack on Langemarck, part of the battle properly known as Third Ypres but popularly known by its final phase, Passchendaele.
