December 2025 to March 2026
The current exhibition in the Challis House consists of paintings and drawings of locations in Sawston, which have been given to the Trust. Most are of the High Street, with the view looking north from the White Lion being a favourite. Two of the featured artists are Jack Barnes and Traviss Teversham. Barnes lived on New Road and worked at the Paper Mill,. His paintings often used old photographs as a starting point. Teversham, a retired schoolmaster who lived on Hillside, worked in watercolours and recorded many scenes in Sawston in the 1950s and 1960s. Other drawings from old photographs are those made by Nigel Perry in 1979, which were reproduced as postcards for sale locally. A distinguished local artist was Pamela, Lady Butterfield whose distinctive pen and ink drawings of the Church and other Sawston scenes also feature. Several artists who exhibited with the Barn Art Society are also featured.
Celebrating the life of Mary Challis
The “Mary@100” exhibition in the Reeve Building celebrates the 100th anniversary of Mary Challis’s birth. It is accompanied by a book “Mary Challis – Her Family, Life and Legacy” which is on sale at £8. The exhibition is currently available to view by asking for access from a Trustee or Garden Volunteer on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during normal garden opening hours.

The Summer 2025 exhibition in Challis House “Sporting Sawston” featured Sawston sports clubs, their origins and current status.

For the Spring 2025 exhibition in the Reeve Building, Sawston Scene presented a glorious exhibition detailing their 55 years’ history and over 300 issues – telling Sawston about the magazine’s history and the people who have driven its success.
