He joined the Royal Flying Corps in April 1916 and was appointed to the Kite Balloon Section 16. While observing for the Vimy Ridge range, his balloon was fired on by the enemy and his section shelled out three times. He was invalided home suffering from severe shock in April and died in Ipswich Hospital on 28th May. He was borne to the grave by a company of wounded soldiers from Whittlesford V.A.D. Hospital.
