Born in Sawston about 1898. The 1901 Census records Herbert V, aged 3.

In the Sawston School log book dated January 28th 1908, Dennis found the name H J Gray who left on that date.

The 1911 Census records Herbert V, aged 13, at school, living with his married sister Miralda Sargent in Caldecote, Baldock.
